Tidal wave Cubensis were created by crossing a monokaryotic culture of both Penis Envy and B+, two fairly common varieties. What does crossing strains entail, or even mean? Crossing strains involves mixing the dna of two different cultures. The process involves first isolating a monokaryon of a strain. Monokaryotic means only one set of gene’s are present, and thus are not capable of reproduction, as in they cannot form mushrooms. This monokaryotic culture is then introduced to the other strain, either through spores or another monokaryotic culture. These two form dikaryotic mycelium, which are capable of growing mushrooms. This does not produce a stable new strain with repeatable traits; stabilizing the strain involves repeated cloning and growing from spores, selecting for particular traits at each interval in the process.
